The high performance Audi S5 is not the ultimate performance version of the Audi A5 range (that accolade belongs to the Audi RS5 which is the subject of a separate review) but it still offers scorching performance but with more real-world fuel bills and insurance costs.

All three Audi S5 models are powered by a supercharged 3.0-litre TFSI V6 petrol engine which delivers 349bhp – enough for 0-62mph acceleration in just 4.5 seconds. And driven with some restraint you should be able to get 30mpg from it, too.

Audi’s quattro four-wheel drive system is standard, ensuring excellent traction in all conditions while the superbly built cabin is one of the best around. There’s even a decent boot.
